 Pointer dog

The Pointer takes its name from his position in the detection of the aroma of the game by "pointing" the hunter's visual sign that he has anything discovered and where he is, at the overshadowed game; the race is sometimes referred to as the English Pointer to distinguish him from other dog races. In the USA it is commonly used to designate the Pointer race, especially south of the Mason–Dixon line ("bird dog"), however this word is typically used to denote all pointing dogs including setters.

The Pointer is a medium-sized breed of dog pointed in Britain, which is often referred to as the English Pointer. Gundog fans utilize pointers as one of the greatest of their kind, but unlike most other species, their function is to point, not re-trieve game. Gundog is a very special sort of game. Gundog game

The prevalent idea is that the Pointer descends from the Old Spanish Pointer which came from Spain to England at the beginning of the 18th century with returning troops. They were traversed with local races once in England to enhance the race's ability to hunt.

Dog historians have had a lot of disagreement regarding Pointer's lineage.  The most popular stance is that the animal is introduced into England from Old Spanish Pointers
The traditional notion is that, after the Utrecht peace, troops who returned from Spain first imported Spanish Pointers into England around 1713. In his 1800 Cynographia Britannica, Sydeham Edwards stated that in a very current era, the 'Spanish pointer, who dwelt in Nor Folk and could fly, was imported in this nation, [England] by a Portugal merchant, and employed by the reduced baron first.'

Other early accounts indicate that the english race was founded by Portuguese Pointers, Italian braccos and French points. In 1902, a sportsman of the Victorian period, William Arkwright, published the book The Pointer and his predecessors frequently regarded it as one of the finest stories of the Pointer. In the book he adds that he discovered no real proof that Spanish Pointers are the base stock of the Pointer but decides on the basis of all facts that this is the most probable history. Note that dog races did not exist in those times, as they are recognized in current times.and that in all those nations a generalized dog type identifying the location of game-birds (usually a short hairy, hollow-scented dog with regional appearance differences).
A second less common belief is a Pointer, present in England, far earlier than the Spanish Pointer, that from the Middle Ages it was used to indicate the location of hares which were later taken up by greyhounds or by hawks; it is considered that the imported European Pointer was heavily influenced by these hogs.

Pointers were initially reported in England from the beginning of the 18th century. In his 1713 poem Rural Sports, John Gay writes that Pointers were employed to hunt for partridge and in 1725 he painted a picture of the kennel of pointers by the Duchy of Kingston-upon-Hull.

A list of sources indicates that early Pointers in Britain are crosses with other races, including mention of Bull Terriers and bulldogs, to impart certain desired qualities, including setters, bloodhounds and foxhounds.Early Pointers were rather heavy, weighty canines that could keep a stable point while the hunter read his weapons. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the constantly improving guns meant that quicker and agiler dogs were being sought to make Greyhounds more and more speedy.  The infusion of Greyhounder blood led to a far better dog, with a relatively narrow loin, tighter lips and a small, tight tail, being the contemporary Pointer.

The pointer is an adaptive, obedient, uniform race, in particular field lines. The Pointer is more distant and is less necessary for human fellowship than other gundog breeds, maybe reflecting the blood of the reserved grayhound in its ancestor.

Popularity and application in the field

When hunting, the Pointer quarters the hunter with his head in a high sweat, when a dog discovers the concealed game, he abruptly stops with the nose pointing to the game so that when the hunter is ready for a shoot, the pointer flushes the animal to be shot. The Pointer is regarded by many authors by its sensitive nosis, large elegant motions and showy pointing position as the finest pointing dog race. Pointer is the most common dog pointing breed employed in United Kingdom by sporting estates and commercial shooters in the US, and also the most popular and successful dog pointing breed in both nations. When compared to many European continental dog breeds the classic Pointer is used only to point and flush before shooting, and if needed, expert retrievers are used to find the game once shot. European breeds are frequently called "hunt-point retrievers" (hunting points retrievers) and are used once shot to find it. Moreover, the Pointer is generally speedier when working and is looking for a more searching game compared to the European pointing races.

The pointer is also used to find the game to be sprayed by the falcan or hawk in the falconry.
